Earlier today, a newly discovered asteroid embraced our planet in what was revealed as the closest approach to Earth. Known as the asteroid 2019 ES, space rock comes within 2.1 million miles of Earth, or nearly nine times the distance between our planet and the moon.

According to asteroid trackers at Jet Propulsion Laboratory of JASA in Pasadena, California, the asteroid 2019 ES buzzed Earth at early morning hours, shot past our planet at 2:44 pm EST.
